Malachite

This copper mineral features a characteristic banding pattern and rich green color. Malachite gets its name from the Greek word malakhe (mallow), a reference to its color. Major sources for this popular stone include Russia, Africa, Australia, and the United States.

Lore

Malachite was used by the Egyptians as early as 4,000 BC. In addition to its jewelry and cosmetic (eye shadow) uses, malachite was used extensively for it’s healing powers.

Malachite is known to be a protection stone.  In the Middle Ages, malachite was thought to impart protection from sorcery.  When worn it is said to fly into pieces as a warning of imminent danger, especially falls.

"Because of its peculiar markings, some of which suggest the form of an eye, malachite was worn in some parts of Italy (e.g., in Bettona) as an amulet to protect the wearer from the spell of the Evil Eye.  Such stones were called "peacock-stones," from their resemblance in color and marking to the peacock's tail." 1

 Known also as a money stone, malachite is thought to impart good fortune in commercial ventures.
