Moonstone A variety of feldspar, moonstones occur in a wide range of colors; white, pink, brown, gray, green, yellowish and sometimes colorless. Moonstones name is derived from the fact that it has a pearly "moon-like" luster (adularescence). Adularia (another name for Moonstone) comes from the Adula Mts, Switzerland. Moonstone was used in Roman jewelry about A.D. 100. Lore As might be guessed by its name, moonstone is thought to be connected with the Moon. The shiller effect in the stone and its magical powers are said to change in step with the moons phase. Once called the "travelers stone", moonstone was once worn to protect against the dangers of travel, especially on the water. In India moonstone is considered to be a sacred gem. In East Indian lore moonstone is a symbol of the third eye. "As a gift for lovers the moonstone takes a high rank, for it is believed to arouse the tender passion, and to give lovers the power to read in the future the fortune, good or ill, that is store for them. To gain this knowledge, however, the stone must be placed in the mouth while the moon is full." 1 Medicinally moonstone has been used as a treatment for women's menstrual problems. Moonstone is one of the birthstones for June. 1) George Frederick Kunz "The Curious Lore of Precious Stones"
