Zircon, zirconium silicate, forms in
igneous and metamorphic rocks, and is found in the common types of plutonic
rocks.
Gray-brown and red-brown zircons are the
most common. Colorless specimens are rare. Brown zircon crystals are heat
treated at temperatures of 1472-1832 degrees F., producing colorless and blue
zircons. The colors of a heat-treaded stone may fade over time by exposure to
sunlight.
Synthetic zircon comes in a full palette
of colors, colorless zircon is often used as a diamond simulate.
Lore
“Zircon has been known since antiquity,
albeit under various names. Today’s name is most likely derived from the
Persian language (“golden colored”). Because of its high refractive index and
strong dispersion, it has great brilliance and intensive fire.”
