Zircon

zircon crystal

;

Zircon, zirconium silicate, forms in igneous and metamorphic rocks, and is found in the common types of plutonic rocks.

Gray-brown and red-brown zircons are the most common.  Colorless specimens are rare.  Brown zircon crystals are heat treated at temperatures of 1472-1832 degrees F., producing colorless and blue zircons.  The colors of a heat-treaded stone may fade over time by exposure to sunlight.

Synthetic zircon comes in a full palette of colors, colorless zircon is often used as a diamond simulate.

Lore

“Zircon has been known since antiquity, albeit under various names.  Today’s name is most likely derived from the Persian language (“golden colored”).  Because of its high refractive index and strong dispersion, it has great brilliance and intensive fire.” 1

 “Zircon is a stone of high intensity and precise focus.  It can be used to stimulate sluggish energies in any of the chakras or meridians.  One of its special capacities is for transmuting spiritual energies into the physical plane.” 2

 “It [zircon] is known as a “stone of virtue”, bringing ones virtuous nature back into the balance with the universal forces.” 3

“Red zircon (hyacinth):  This stone increases riches if worn or used in such rituals.  It also guard against injuries.  A protective stone, it vitalizes the body, lends energy in time of physical stress, and heals.  Worn, it draws pain from the body.” 4

 “Zircon:  Strengthens the mind.  Aids bowel problems.  Balances pituitary and pineal glands.  Aligns subtle bodies.  Emotional balance, self-esteem.  Aids sleep. . . [an] All around healer.” 5
